Day 1 — 22 August

Colombo to Laxapana

The journey begins

After landing in Colombo, I decided to travel towards Laxapana, where I had a rope-jumping activity planned for the following day.

Instead of taking a cab, I opted for a tuk-tuk. I wanted to enjoy the roads and experience the landscape along the way. The fare was approximately LKR 8,000, which I estimated to be about half the price of a cab.

I initially expected such a long tuk-tuk journey to be uncomfortable, but it turned out to be much more comfortable than I had anticipated. The views along the route were beautiful, and the journey itself became one of the memorable parts of the trip.

It took approximately five to six hours to reach my accommodation. I stayed in a homestay near the Laxapana area, about 500 metres downhill, for approximately ₹1,500 for the night.

The stay was worth every penny. Being surrounded by mountains made it a perfect place to relax before the next day's adventure.

Travel notes

  • Tuk-tuk from Colombo: approximately LKR 8,000.
  • Homestay: approximately ₹1,500 per night.
  • Travel time: approximately 5–6 hours.

My takeaway: Don't always choose the fastest or most conventional transport option. Sometimes the journey is an experience in itself.

Day 2 — 23 August

Rock Rope Jump and the Journey to Trincomalee

A rainy mountain morning

It rained throughout the night, and the weather was incredible. Sitting between the mountains, surrounded by fresh air and the landscape after the rain, was an experience I genuinely enjoyed.

The next morning, it was time for the main activity: a rope jump from a rock at Laxapana.

The activity cost approximately LKR 54,000, including a 30-second cinematic reel.

Getting to Polgahawela

After the activity, I started travelling towards Polgahawela to catch my train to Trincomalee.

The journey took around four hours. I used local buses and tuk-tuks, changing buses twice before eventually hiring a tuk-tuk for the remaining journey. I could have continued using public transport, but I was too tired to manage more changes.

The total transport cost from the Laxapana area to Polgahawela was approximately LKR 6,000, including LKR 5,000 for the tuk-tuk.

From Polgahawela, I boarded a first-class chair-car train to Trincomalee. The ticket cost approximately LKR 2,000.

Travel notes

  • Rope jump with cinematic reel: LKR 54,000.
  • Laxapana to Polgahawela: approximately LKR 6,000.
  • Train to Trincomalee: approximately LKR 2,000.

My takeaway: Allow flexibility in your schedule after an adventure activity. Long public-transport journeys with multiple changes can become tiring.

Days 3–5 — 24–26 August

Trincomalee and Scuba Diving

Learning to explore the underwater world

Trincomalee was a completely different experience from the mountains. The area has beautiful beaches, clear coastal waters and a relaxed atmosphere.

I spent approximately two days completing my scuba diving training and earned my PADI scuba diving certification. The course cost around LKR 150,000.

For accommodation, I stayed in a homestay costing approximately ₹700 per night. Food was affordable, and I spent only around LKR 8,000 on meals over three days.

After finishing my scuba activities on 26 August, I explored Trincomalee. The beaches were calm and beautiful, and there were also places to go out in the evening.

Trincomalee is particularly appealing to travellers who enjoy diving, snorkelling, beaches and marine experiences.

Travel notes

  • PADI scuba certification course: approximately LKR 150,000.
  • Accommodation: approximately ₹700 per night.
  • Food for three days: approximately LKR 8,000.

My takeaway: If you want to try scuba diving, allow enough time for the training and certification process rather than treating it as a quick sightseeing activity.

Day 6 — 27 August

Whale Watching, Pigeon Island and a Road Trip to Ella

A morning on the ocean

I started the day with whale and dolphin watching, followed by a trip to Pigeon Island.

I managed to see whales during the boat trip. At Pigeon Island, I saw fish and turtles, making the experience worthwhile even without a long stay.

The combined cost of the whale-watching and Pigeon Island activities was approximately LKR 30,000, and they took up around half the day.

The long drive to Ella

That evening, I headed towards Ella. There was no convenient direct bus or local transport option for my journey, so I hired a cab for approximately LKR 30,000.

The drive took around seven hours, with two or three stops along the way.

Fortunately, the driver was friendly, and the journey became a road trip rather than just a transfer. We spotted elephants and enjoyed the scenery along the route.

I also tried a traditional Sri Lankan treat: buffalo curd served with sweet treacle, a local favourite.

Travel notes

  • Whale watching and Pigeon Island: approximately LKR 30,000 combined.
  • Cab from Trincomalee to Ella: approximately LKR 30,000.
  • Journey time: approximately 7 hours.

My takeaway: A private transfer can be expensive, but after several days of activities, the convenience and flexibility can make it worthwhile.

Days 7–8 — 28–29 August

Ella's Mountains, Hiking and Scenic Railways

Staying in Ella

I checked into a beautiful hotel in Ella for two nights, costing approximately ₹5,000 in total. Breakfast for the two days cost around US$10.

After arriving, I went for a short walk, enjoyed Sri Lankan curry and rice, and returned to the hotel to rest.

Little Adam's Peak

The next morning, I headed out to hike Little Adam's Peak.

The trail takes you through lush greenery and tea-country scenery, opening up to panoramic views of the surrounding hills. It is a great option for travellers looking for a rewarding hike without committing to a particularly demanding trek.

Nine Arch Bridge

After the hike, I visited the famous Nine Arch Bridge.

I planned my visit for around 3:30 PM because I wanted to see a train crossing the bridge. The bridge was roughly 2–3 km from my accommodation, and I spent much of the day walking between places.

The bridge's stone arches, surrounding jungle and railway tracks make it one of Ella's most recognisable landmarks.

After returning, I had lunch and enjoyed a body massage, another popular way to unwind in Ella.

The famous train to Nanu Oya

On the morning of 29 August, I boarded the scenic train from Ella to Nanu Oya.

  • Departure: approximately 9:45 AM.
  • Arrival: approximately 1:00 PM.
  • Ticket: approximately LKR 800.

The journey through Sri Lanka's hill country is known for its tea plantations, green mountains, tunnels and winding railway tracks.

Travel notes

  • Ella accommodation for two nights: approximately ₹5,000.
  • Breakfast for two days: approximately US$10.
  • Food budget in Ella: up to LKR 5,000.
  • Ella to Nanu Oya train: approximately LKR 800.

My takeaway: Spend at least two nights in Ella if you want to combine the main viewpoints, the Nine Arch Bridge, a relaxed evening and the scenic train ride.

Day 9 — 29 August

Nuwara Eliya and Little England

After arriving at Nanu Oya around 1 PM, I headed towards Nuwara Eliya, a hill town known for its cool climate and colonial-era architecture.

I stayed near the Gregory Lake area, with accommodation costing approximately ₹3,500 for one night.

After checking in, I went for a short walk and visited the British-style colonial area and the historic post office.

Nuwara Eliya is often called Little England because of its colonial heritage, cool weather and distinctive architecture.

I kept the day relaxed, explored the town and returned to my accommodation to sleep before travelling to Colombo the following morning.

Travel notes

  • Accommodation: approximately ₹3,500 for one night.
  • Main experiences: Gregory Lake area, colonial architecture and the historic post office.

My takeaway: Nuwara Eliya is a good stop for travellers who want a quieter hill-town experience between Ella and Colombo.

Day 10 — 30 August

Colombo, Lotus Tower and Galle Face Green

Returning to the city

I took a Volvo bus from Nuwara Eliya towards Colombo. The fare was approximately ₹400, and the journey took around six hours.

After arriving, I checked into my sea-facing hotel, which had a balcony. The hotel cost approximately ₹17,000 for two nights.

In the evening, I visited Colombo Lotus Tower. Afterwards, I returned towards my hotel and spent time sitting by the sea at Galle Face Green.

After several days in the mountains and on the road, the ocean breeze and city lights made for a relaxing evening.

Travel notes

  • Bus to Colombo: approximately ₹400.
  • Hotel for two nights: approximately ₹17,000.
  • Evening activities: Lotus Tower and Galle Face Green.

Day 11 — 31 August

Exploring Colombo

I spent the next day exploring Colombo's markets, religious landmarks and city attractions.

I visited a mosque and a temple, returned to the Lotus Tower area, and explored the local markets. I also took a short coastal train ride from Kollupitiya towards Bambalapitiya.

The train ride was particularly memorable because the railway runs close to the ocean. It was a simple and inexpensive way to experience another side of the city.

In the evening, I returned to my hotel and relaxed in its infinity pool.

Travel notes

  • Local transport: approximately LKR 4,000 for the Colombo stay.
  • Food: approximately LKR 5,000.
  • Coastal train ride: approximately ₹5.
  • Colombo sightseeing: markets, mosque, temple, Lotus Tower and the coastal railway.

My takeaway: Keep at least one full day for Colombo. It offers a different experience from the beaches and highlands, combining city life, culture, markets and the waterfront.

Day 12 — 1 September

Departure

The next day, I checked out and headed to the airport for my flight home.

The trip had taken me from the mountains of Laxapana to the underwater world of Trincomalee, through Ella's hiking trails and scenic railways, and finally to Colombo's oceanfront.

It was a journey full of contrasts: adventure, nature, wildlife, local food, long road trips and moments of relaxation.

Budget breakdown

The following figures are based on the costs I reported during the trip. All amounts are approximate, and everything is shown in rupees so the table adds up to something you can read at a glance.

Converted at roughly ₹1 to LKR 3.5 and US$1 to ₹88. Prices in the day-by-day account above are left in the currency I actually paid in, which is the one you will see on the ground.

Practical tips for travellers

  1. Choose transport based on the experience you want. A tuk-tuk can be a memorable way to enjoy the countryside, but compare fares and journey times before committing to long distances.

  2. Keep buffer time for connections. Local buses may involve multiple changes, especially when travelling from remote areas.

  3. Plan the scuba course in advance. Allow enough time for training, required dives and certification.

  4. Check marine-tour conditions. Whale sightings are not guaranteed, and sea conditions can affect boat trips.

  5. Plan your Ella days efficiently. Little Adam's Peak and Nine Arch Bridge can be combined, but walking between locations takes time.

  6. Consider the Ella–Nanu Oya train. Reserve your ticket when possible and confirm the current timetable before travel.

  7. Keep Colombo's coastal train ride on your list. It is an inexpensive way to enjoy views of the ocean from the railway.

  8. Carry some cash. Local transport, small eateries and some activity providers may have different payment options.

Final thoughts

Sri Lanka is ideal for travellers who don't want to limit a holiday to one type of experience. In one trip, you can hike in the mountains, learn scuba diving, watch whales, explore colonial towns, travel by scenic railway and finish your days beside the ocean.

My biggest takeaway was that some of the best memories came from the journeys between destinations: the tuk-tuk ride through the mountains, the unexpected elephant sightings on the drive to Ella, and the simple coastal train ride in Colombo.

If you're planning a trip to Sri Lanka, use this itinerary as a starting point, adjust the pace to your preferences, and leave some room for the unexpected.
